Clones, Test Tube Babies and Chimeras...?
Well, i used to know alot about all this, but I realised that i'm totaly blank now. So,
*How is a clone made.
*What's the need for test tube babies. And how does it work, like what's the process. And what can test tube babies go upto, in the case of species genus etc
*How is a chimera made
*And can any "new" type of animal be made from using test tubes within it's limitations (species, genus etc)
for eg, can a lion and a tiger have a baby thru testubes.
or a man and a tiger
*And in the same way for chimeras, like, can a man and tigers dna be fused.
1. A clone is made by inserting DNA into an enucleated (nucleus removed) egg cell. Dolly the sheep was actually made using three sheep. One sheep provided the egg. The nucleus was removed and replaced with a nucleus from a second sheep's body cell (so the new egg cell is diploid and can divide). This new egg was implanted into a third sheep's uterus (the third sheep is the surrogate mother).
2. "Test tube babies" are babies conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF). They are used for women who have trouble conceiving on their own, due to fallopian tube blockage or other factors. The process:
-An egg is taken from the woman using a long probe.
-The egg is mixed with sperm taken from the man.
-The fertilized egg is placed into a solution and grows outside of the body for a couple days
-The embryo is placed back into the uterus.
Often more than one egg is fertilized, and more than one embryo is put in, because there is a high chance that they won't implant into the uterine wall.
Hybrid organisms have been made by injecting sperm from one species into the uterus of another. In fact, a mule is the product of a donkey and a horse. However, creating a new species is not so simple: with the exception of wolves and dogs, species are defined as a group of organisms that can reproduce and create fertile offspring. Thus, most of these "new" animals (like mules) are sterile.
Chimeras are usually not "made." They just happen. Fraternal twin embryos for some reason fuse together, making one embryo. The result is one baby. (There haven't been any cases of two embryos of different gender fusing and coming to term.) Half of the child's cells will have one set of DNA, and the other half will have another set. For example, the child's blood might be genetically different from his skin or spinal cord. Of course, since the child is a product of two brothers, the DNA will not be so different.
I addressed "new" animals above. I don't think it's been tried with species that are very different, like men and tigers. But if it was tried, there's a good chance that the embryo would not be viable and no offspring would result.
Again, there haven't been any man-tiger chimeras, because there haven't been many cases of a human and a tiger embryo in the same uterus. (Remember that chimeras don't have fused DNA, they just have different sets.) And again, I'm not sure that the result would be viable.
