Volume Potentiometer

Can I connect the ground terminal of my pot Volume Control on the metal box that you speak?

I need to connect the terminal Land potentiometer volume controls installed on two speakers. One speaker has a metal box, can I use for the land? The other speaker is a wooden box and is attached to a concrete wall. What can I use to land there? Can I drive a nail or screw to screw into the wood to use as earth? These speakers intercom only works for a few seconds at a time (usually less than a minute). I have already installed a pot that allows me to basically turn the speakerphone on or off, but of course not only wanted to use the boat as a switch, I wanted to be able to manage the speakers amperage to decrease the volume.
