Turntable whistle of the cartridge and stylus or guilt?
She found a very old Marantz TT185 Automatic Turntable and I get much whistling in the books clean. This is the old stylus or cartridge and guilt and may actually interfere with my records? I am hesitant to play all original pressings, but I do not know whether to release cash for new equipment.
Hiss is usually caused by electronics to be protected against interference, the cartridge. Hiss is "white noise", which is randomly generated by the universe, a television tuned to any station is excitement in the audio channel and points Random black and white and color signals of a video channel. This applies to analog signals, digital signals are not. Your best bet is to get a new cartridge and stylus. Hiss may come from the friction of the needle on the disk surface, used a pencil, make as much noise as the grating nails on a chalkboard, it comes from lack of lubrication. You want a free pen and a cartridge in Good Condition and the only way to be sure is to change both. Believe me, it will be useful to sure things are in good condition as can be when you play your precious LP's, you do as little damage as possible to the scan.
