if I'm gettng a condenser microphone Do I need a preamp?
I m thinking 'about getting a microphone condenser. What I want to know is I need a preamp? I have an M-Audio FireWire 410 with phantom power. Could I just to the microphone via the FireWire cable instead of a preamp? because you can add an additional volume via the FireWire cable.
Depends what you want to use the microphone. A pre-amplifier is a big plus if you voice (like a compressor), but probably too much for micing an amp guitar or a wind instrument. You're not "need" of a preamplifier in any situation. Some condenser mics have a battery that can connect to anything, and others do not require phantom power, it already has. A preamplifier only gives you a bigger, more warm sound and helps maintain a voice rang hollow.
